Jake Gray - A Story Within A Story
"Akn is both a talented artist and a deeply empathetic storyteller. The first project we worked on together was a wordless six-page scene about a single moment, less than a minute, that would shape the life of its central character. I needed to see this moment illustrated for meta purposes (it’s part of a story-within-a-story) and so that I could better understand this character I had created.

The process began when I mustered up my severely limited artistic skills and Google’s image search to put together a lookbook outlining what I wanted to see. Step two was handing the materials to Akn so that she could review them, ask meaningful questions, make observations, and generally understand what I was trying to do.

Once all of the artsy prep was accomplished, Akn very fluidly shifted to a professional sensibility in order to outline her pricing, the timeline, and all the other contractual minutiae that are anathema to creatives. However, the professional part of the process was painless and over with quickly, and Akn settled back into her artistic mindset.

Over the course of about three weeks, Akn delivered a rough draft and then six completed pages (one at a time). Throughout the process, she was communicative and actively searching for feedback of any kind; this was not just a chance for her to demonstrate her talent, but also something she considered to be a learning opportunity.

As for the art itself, I was astonished by what she produced. Her sense of scale and color are magnificent, and her style is so distinctly her own that I’d call it idiosyncratic. But beyond that, what she pulled off was capturing the spirit of the moment that up until then had only existed in my head. She took words and ideas, abstractions, and gave them physical shape in the form of bodies in motion, ocean waves skating across sand, rain falling, and spontaneous facial expressions."
